The Dorothy Day Center is Saint Charles parish’s all-volunteer, delivery only hunger ministry. The food warehouse was completed and grocery deliveries from the Center began in 2005. We serve families and individuals in NW Oklahoma City and the NW suburbs who do not have transportation to their local food pantry for many reasons: chronic illness, elderly, homebound, no car, etc. Volunteer drivers use personal vehicles to take groceries to requesters. You do not have to be Catholic to volunteer or receive. Through a contract with the Regional Food Bank, we obtain the food to distribute once a month. Volunteer opportunities are as follows: Second Monday of each month, Regional Food Bank truck arrives between 9 and 9:30 a.m. at the Dorothy Day Center. Volunteers needed to put boxes of food on shelves and the walk-in refrigerator and freezer. Time commitment is about an hour to an hour and a half. Fourth Saturday of each month, meet at the Dorothy Day Center at 8:30 a.m. to drive and deliver groceries to households with no access to transportation. The time commitment is two to three hours.
